Pocket diary kept by 2nd Sergeant George Lockley 1861-1862.

Fragment of diary kept by George Lockley, Company G, 1st Michigan Infantry Regiment, covering the periods September 1861-January 1862 and June-September 1862. Encampment locations mentioned during the former period include Ann Arbor, Mich.; Kalorama Heights, Washington, D.C.; Camp Union, Bladensburg, Md.; and Annapolis Junction, Md. For the latter period, Lockley describes activities during the Virginia Peninsular Campaign and at the Second Battle of Bull Run. (An August 31, 1862, entry reports getting "whupped yesterday at & near Bull Run.") There are casualty lists for June 27 and July 1, 1862. Also included are personnel rosters ("Roll of Co 'G'") and quartermaster reports on provisions, clothing issues, etc.

George Lockley was a resident of Ann Arbor, Michigan. During the Civil War, he served as a colonel in the 1st Michigan Infantry. From the guide to the George Lockley papers [microform], 1861-1866, (Bentley Historical Library, University of Michigan) Born Birmingham, England, resident of Ann Arbor, Mich.; enlisted August 18, 1861; rose through the ranks and by war's end was the colonel commanding the regiment.
